Gopher commits Blake McLaughlin and Clayton Phillips playing in World Junior A Challenge

This week a pair of Gopher commits will be getting international experience in the World Junior A Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia.

Forward Blake McLaughlin and defenseman Clayton Phillips represent the United States in the six team tournament. Host Canada has two teams along with one team from the US, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Russia.

All 22 players on the American squad play in the USHL.

McLaughlin, a native of Grand Rapids, is currently fifth in the USHL in points with 21 (8G-13A) in 17 games. He recently decided to stay with the Chicago Steel rather than go back to Grand Rapids and defend the Class AA MN HS championship.

Phillips, a native of Edina, returns to World Junior A Challenge. He won a gold medal in the 2016 World Junior A  Challenge along with current Minnesota freshman Brannon McManus. The Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick, who plays for Muskegon after being traded by Fargo earlier in the season, leads all USHL defensemen with 5 goals.

The US schedule for the World Junior A Challenge can be found below. Each team plays the two others in its group - Czech Republic and Canada West being with the US in Group B - with the group winner getting a bye into the semifinals.
